Two heavily drugged elephants are prepared for translocation to Swaziland, whil e a biologist takes samples to measure their stress. An alternative to culling , translocation is dangerous: One angry matriarch nearly pulled a hovering hel icopter out of the air as rangers tried to shoot her with tranquilizer darts. Despite all b est efforts, families are sometimes broken apart, causing anguish for those who leave and those who stay. Moving elephants is also expensive. Were it not fo r the ban on ivory trading, the parks rapidly accumulating hoard of ivory could pay for tra nslocations well into the future. Animal rights groups, anxious to stop cullin g altogether, have raised millions of dollars to support alternatives, includin g birth control. Unknown / WHS / Robertstock, Theodora Youmans holding Wisconsin Flag. Portrait of Theodora Youmans (Mrs. Henry), President of the Wisconsin Woman Suffrage Association, holding a Wisconsin flag. The Ada James papers, held by the Society, document the Wisconsin Womens Suffrage Association, its activities and participants. Ada James (1876-1952) was a social reformer, humanitarian, and pacifist residing in Richland Center, Wisconsin. The collection contains material on her parents, David G. James and Laura Briggs James; these papers reflect her fathers interest in employment for women, woman suffrage, spiritualism, birth control, and socialism. Among the volumes are also diaries, 1865, 1882-1904, and proceedings of the meetings of the Wisconsin Womans Suffrage Association, 1885-1903, kept by her mother. Ada James correspondence dates 1890-1952. Most numerous are the letters of the period from 1911 to 1918, when she was active in the suffrage movement as president of the Political Equality League, 1911-1913, and a member of the Wisconsin Womans Suffrage Association and of the National Womans Party. |
